Review: A. Magazine

The 1990s birthed the now-defunct A. Magazine, a corny but fun magazine by Asian Americans for Asian Americans. I have an issue from December 2001 with Ichiro Suzuki in silver goggles on the cover; a cover line reads “APAs and the 9/11 Tragedy.” Nine months earlier, the February 2001 issue offered a feature on teen pregnancy and a report on South Asian workers’ rights. On the cover, the chef Ming Tsai holds a yellow rose between chopsticks. I love that it took on a huge range of stories, both silly and substantial, without ever taking itself too seriously. ––Wei Tchou
