Letter to the Editors

Dear Editors,

I’m not sure Lux does Letters to the Editor, but I felt compelled to write because I am a subscriber and lover of the archives.

I was excited to see an article on the New York War Crimes, which has been such a smart, innovative way to organize and report on the stories coming out of the genocide in Palestine.

I was slightly disappointed that there was no acknowledgment of the original New York Crimes, created by Gran Fury, the artists’ collective devoted to AIDS activism. The New York Public Library has a collection of their work in their digital collections. I’m not sure that I’ve seen much, if any, acknowledgment that this idea is likely derived from the fight against AIDS, and the long legacy of organizing by that generation of artists.

There is still so much to learn from the work of AIDS activists and the public art they created. I think the New York War Crimes is doing great, important work and part of the reason is that those artists helped pave the way.
